How to Curate Your Wardrobe with Intention

An intentional wardrobe is about curating a wardrobe you fall in love with that works for your lifestyle and reflects your personality. A wardrobe that will also last you many years down the road. What pushed me to build my own wardrobe with intention was that I felt like something was missing in my wardrobe. The pieces I had no longer felt like me, and I found myself holding onto old things only to never wear them, and no longer connecting to my clothing.

Building an intentional wardrobe helps you step inward and discover more about yourself. It’s curated with thought. Your lifestyle, who you are, and personal style are all elements that go into building an intentional wardrobe.

Does Your Wardrobe Fit Your Lifestyle

Lifestyle is an important factor because that indicates what you wear almost daily. Are you always on the go and travelling, do you work a corporate 9-5 job? How would you describe your lifestyle and in what ways does your wardrobe fit this? This would be a good time to re-assess what you currently have especially if your lifestyle and body has changed. Head to my blog post about re-assessing your wardrobe here.

How Would You Describe Your Style?

What styles, and specific cuts do you lean towards… Classic, feminine, elegant etc. I suggest choosing 1-3 types that fit your personal style best as you move onto building a wardrobe you love. A great way to figure this out is to make a Pinterest board and assess what styles your drawn to and save them.

Understand Your Body Type & What Styles/Colors Enhance Your Features

Bodies are always changing and evolving throughout life. When building your wardrobe with intention it’s best to focus on what works for your body as it is in this very moment. Your undertones and colors make a very big difference in giving you a vibrant glow. A good way to figure out what your colors are at home is to simply use gold or silver jewelry. Cool undertones are often complimented with silver or white gold. Warm undertones are often complimented with gold.

Build Your Foundation

Give yourself time and patience, trust me it’s worth it. I personally start with the versatile classics that I can style in different ways. For me, this includes dresses, jeans, silk skirts and cardigans. Start with the basics, but aim to invest in high-quality. This doesn’t mean you should or have to be spending hundreds of dollars but paying attention to quality brands you like that fit your budget is essential! I love using Poshmark to find second hand pieces of brands i love.

Getting intentional about what you actually need rather than want, is really helpful when it comes to staying on track and not getting distracted when a new trend comes back into style, or when your eye catches something you see online.

The Power of Accessorizing

I think we often forget the power of accessorizing. Accessories are so unique to ones style, and can completely change the look of a singular outfit just by switching them up. This includes hair accessories, jewelry, handbags, sunglasses and cold weather essentials.

Discovering your style with intention should be fun, and rewarding knowing in the end you will be able to get the most out of your closet and have fun styling what you have in different ways many years down the roads.

First things first, reassess what you already have. Create three different piles Keep, Donate and Maybe. Get very particular and realistic. Once completed, set aside the donate pile and assess the maybe pile. Then, place clothing in either the donate or keep.

Overall, building a wardrobe with intention should help you discover more about your style, lifestyle and express who you are. Have fun with it and take the time to build it with purpose.
