Simple Ways to Implement Sustainable Fashion into your Life

Sustainability is the future of fashion. This past year, I’ve learned a lot about sustainability, and little ways you can implement them into your own lifestyle. I used to be overwhelmed with the idea of a sustainable lifestyle, but I learned that it doesn’t have to be hard! By no means are we all perfect, but we can always strive for improvement. Below are five ways to incorporate sustainability into your life…

  1. Sift through your closet and either donate, recycle, swap, or sell the clothes that you no longer want or need. Sifting through your closet will give you an overall idea of what your eye is drawn to, the colors that you prefer, what you do not like or don’t like and what you want to add to your closest in the future.
  2. Be conscious of your personal carbon footprint, and become aware of alternative ways to reduce your impact. For example, when online shopping, opt for a sustainable packaging option if applicable. Pay attention to the fabrics that you’re purchasing, and do a little bit of research on who made your clothes and where. Check out, good on you to research ethical and sustainable brand ratings.
  3. Shop second-hand, start swapping, and shop vintage! Goodwill and Buffalo exchange are great places to donate to. When I’m looking for luxury vintage pieces I often search and sell my clothing on Poshmark! When your clothing is no longer wearable, there are many ways to incorporate them into your everyday life! If you like to sew, create scrunchies out of silk or satin pieces, or even reuse fabric as a hand towel. Lastly, swap your clothes with Swap Society. By doing so, you will be able to wear new clothes all the time, save money and reduce your carbon footprint.
  4. Let go of impulse buying. Ask yourself, do I really need this, or do I want it? Do I have something similar at home that can be styled the same way? What pieces do I have that are similar in color?
  5. Shop for timeless fashion pieces. These pieces will always be in style, are incredibly versatile and can be styled in many ways. Some of my favorites include oversized blazers, trench coats and of course, the perfect LBD.
