Styling a Fashion Show – What I learned
Styling a Fashion show? I styled my first Fashion Show at the Hamptons Fashion Week in August 2022 for BOLD Swim. I’ve compiled 8 tips and break down what I’ve learned from my experience so far, as I couldn’t find any advice available online at the time.
- You are styling a fashion show because you are talented, capable, creative and deserving. Believe in yourself. The Designer/s, team and models are depending on you to succeed. You are truly the creative mind backstage for the fashion show bringing the vision of the brand to life once the models hit the runway.
- Don’t be afraid to ask questions, but know when to do so. Anyone who is backstage is going to be focused on their own tasks.
- Be willing to help if needed! Expect to potentially be pulled in a few different directions. Things move quickly, but stick to your plan…On that note…
- Create an itinerary for the fashion show. I personally like to make a list of the timing of fittings, when the models need to start getting dressed, when they need to be ready, and the start of the show. This was super helpful for me so I can stay on task.
- Stay calm if something unexpectedly pops up. Things happen. Whether it’s a delay of time, a model not showing up or the AC going out at the location… It all works out, and it’s a collaborative effort.
- Bring a few extras. Create an emergency kit filled with stylist essentials (double sided tape, nippies etc.), always bring a change of shoes and clothes. I was lucky enough to walk with Tiffany and Brianna at the end of the fashion show so we made sure to bring a spare set of clothes and shoes to change into. I brought the essentials in a duffle bag and was able to store it at our booth.
- Stay hydrated, bring easy snacks like granola bars, and bring a portable charger!! Even if you don’t end up needing to have a bite, or use the charger, there will most likely be someone who would need it.
- Just because it’s your first show, don’t dim your shine. You are there for a reason. Have fun, stay present, and breathe. Embrace the moment.
