Behind the Label: Devan Gregori on Designing Modern Urban Womenswear

Devan Gregori, Fashion Designer and Founder of Devan Gregori Studio, is launching her Fall/ Winter ‘20 sustainable clothing collection in September.

“What we wear is so closely connected to how we feel about ourselves, how we are perceived, and how we approach the world. I want women to feel empowered, and ready to take on anything.”

-Devan Gregori

Gregori is from San Francisco and has travelled the world, gaining experience in the fashion industry. After finishing her degree at UC Berkeley, she went on to the design school École de Condé in Lyon, France. During this time, she met her beloved mentor and friend Yoshi Kondo, with whom she worked closely as an intern in Paris and continued to work with from time to time thereafter. “My time working for Yoshi Kondo in Paris influenced how I approach the structure of a garment and not being afraid to be playful or to experiment.” She also gained experience working for Trista in Mexico City. “I was exposed to the intricate world of hand embroidery and appliqué, of juxtaposition of color and texture in bold ways.” Her travels have shaped how she designs. From textiles to silhouettes, fabrics, and colors her inspiration is derived from around the world.

Gregori wanted to create a lighthearted collection that embodied the idea of a certain freedom which stems from the inspiration behind Devan Gregori Studio, “The freedom to run, to explore, to take risks, and to be who you want to be.”

The DGS Fall/Winter ‘20 collection is filled with everyday versatile pieces, and neutral tones with a pop of color. Gregori’s favorite piece is the Isabel jumpsuit due to its everyday comfort and wearability. Throughout her collection, you will notice a soaring bird print. “I use a rich jacquard fabric that is woven in Lyon, France by a mill that has been owned and operated by the same family for three generations. Beautiful birds soar that are reminiscent of those by the French artist Georges Bracques. They evoke that idea of freedom that I wanted to explore this collection. It’s definitely a statement!”

DGS practices sustainability by using naturally sourced fabrics such as Tencel™ “Tencel is a fabric that has a 99% closed loop production process. All the water/ additives used to create the material can be recycled instead of turning into waste that runs off into our waterways.” Gregori is mindful of the impact small decisions can have and all DGS packaging is made from recycled materials. Lastly, she practices honest manufacturing while working with a small team of talented garment workers. “We work on perfecting samples, modifying patterns, and I incorporate everyone’s feedback, finalizing all the small details that make each piece so special. I wouldn’t be here without them and their craftsmanship.”

Devan Gregori strives to produce quality, sustainable clothing you can create your own memories in as years pass by. “This line is a reflection of my personal style, along with my vision of what clothing can be. I want women to rely on my brand for their everyday; something that is kept throughout the years and cherished, a staple in their wardrobe. The clothes should be a testament to the memories that they make in them.”

  1. Great post! I love reading about new collections especially from designers I haven’t seen before. The sustainability approach is what appealed the most (aside from the beautiful pieces). Especially with all things 2020, sustainability and quality are two aspects in fashion that really need to align. And I commend all designers who actively are considerate of the sustainability in their entire production line 👏🏼

Love her approach to memories too! Staple pieces are the most important!!
